The 2024 edition of the Summer School Hues of Writing (HoW), organised by the University of Pisa’s Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics within the framework of the Excellence Project CECIL, focuses on Italian Scriptwriting for Theatre and TV Series. It takes place from 8 to 13 July 2024 at the Polo congressuale Le Benedettine (piazza San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, 16).
The international Summer School Hues of Writing (HoW) aims to strengthen writing competence and skills in different fields (journalism, scientific writing, writing for the web, creative writing).
The Summer School offers intensive writing courses focusing each year on a different theme. Workshops are led by established national and international professionals. The School also organises conferences and round tables, as well as fringe activities linked to the cultural life of Pisa (guided tours, cinema and theatre performances, etc.).
The 2024 edition of the Summer School Hues of Writing (HoW) focuses on Scriptwriting for Theatre and TV Series and takes place from 8 to 13 July 2024.
Scriptwriting for Theatre and TV Series is the 2024 edition of the Summer School Hues of Writing (HoW), which is organised by the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics at the University of Pisa within the framework of the Excellence Project 2023-2027 CECIL. It takes place from 8 to 13 July 2024 at the Polo congressuale Le Benedettine (piazza San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, 16). This edition is on Italian scriptwriting and offers two separate curricula: writing for the theatre, and writing for TV series. The study programme is workshop-based, with a total duration of 28 hours per curriculum and an additional 7 hours for the final presentation of the students’ work. A plenary lecture and a panel discussion in joint classes with experts in the fields of literature, creative writing, adaptation and transmedia studies complete the course. The author of the best screenplay will be invited to the presentation day of the 2025 edition of the Summer School. Students will be offered coffee and lunch breaks throughout the week.
During the week several cultural events will be organised in Pisa, among which guided tours of the town, cinema and theatre performances.
The Summer School is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate university students, as well as professionals in the Humanities (PhD candidates, teachers, researchers, etc.).
Two funding grants will be awarded by the University of Pisa and the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics (Excellence Project CECIL).
What language will workshops be held in?
Workshops will be held in Italian.
Students are required to possess a C1 level knowledge of Italian.
Can the 3 ECTS awarded through the Summer School final test be used for the student’s university career?
The 3 ECTS will be evaluated according to the Italian grade system (x/30).
Students of the Degree and Master Courses of the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics may use them to cover part of the “Scelta libera” credits in their university study plan.
Are funding grants available to cover Summer School tuition fees?
Two funding grants will be awarded by the University of Pisa and the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics (Excellence Project CECIL).
Priority will be given to (in decreasing order of preference):
The winner of the Writing for the Scene 2023 Competition (deadline January 8, 2024) will receive a grant to attend the Summer School.
What do fees cover?
Fees cover all coffee and lunch breaks throughout the week
Is accommodation available?
Students who need accommodation in Pisa may benefit from a discount rate.

What is the minimum number of participants for the Summer School to be activated?
The minimum number is 15.
What is the maximum number of participants?
The maximum number is 24.
